Tell us about your background.

I studied computer engineering at Boğaziçi University and spent a year of college at University of Washington in Seattle as an exchange student. While at school I interned at big technology firms, working in data warehouse and business intelligence projects. During my college years I was an active member of the Extemporaneousness Acting Club and Bogazici Debating Society and I also played at Bogazici University Ultimate Frisbee team for three and a half years. More importantly, I am a huge Fenerbahce fan and I’m currently serving at the administrative body of 1907 University Sipporters Fenerbahce Association.

Describe your work here at Invent.

As a part of the software and product development team I play different roles in different projects. My job here includes establishing data transfer systems between client database and ours, implementing the algorithms designed by our algorithms department, and developing applications to deliver merchandising and planning decisions to the client.

What is a typical day at Invent like?

I usually kick off my day with tea and sandwiches from the cafeteria.  I create a to do list for the day early in the morning. A typical day’s work includes coding, writing reports, doing research or trying to fix a bug. When I’m coding I like listening to my “Deep Focus” list on Spotify. On most days I spend lunch and coffee breaks with my coworkers whom I enjoy hanging out with. We have a small library in the office, I like spending time there reading.

Why did you choose to work in the field of data analytics?

Because of the recent hype, data analytics seems like a new idea, but in reality businesses have been utilizing data for sometime now. What has really changed in the past couple of years is the volume and complexity of data and our capacity to turn it into value.   I think big data will continue its evolution and will transform, not only businesses, but every aspect of our lives. That’s the reason I chose to work in data analytics, because in not so distant future it’s going to play an even more significant role in people’s and businesses’ decision making.

What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your job?

Our work depends on our clients’ data but the structure of data is different with every client. Cleaning and shaping the data and managing data in huge quantities are not easy tasks. The other important thing is speed. Making things work faster is a constant challenge. When it comes to speed there is always room for improvement. One of the most rewarding parts of our job is proving the value of data and technology to businesses in real terms. It feels good to help our clients, which are mostly big retailers, enhance their performance with better insight and decision-making.

What is your favorite off-duty activity?

Sports.  I love the passion of supporting a team and I can’t think of a better way to blow off steam than watching your team play. I play football and tennis but nothing beats the excitement of playing in tournaments with my Ultimate Frisbee team.

Tell us about your background.

I studied Industrial Engineering at Bogazici University and continue studying there in the gradate program.  I began working for Invent after finishing college. I’m from Izmir and I graduated from Izmir Science High School.

Describe your work here at Invent.

I work at the algorithms department as a junior data scientist. Our department mostly consists of people with engineering and mathematics degrees.   As a team we build and test mathematical models that shape the way businesses make decisions.  When you do that you need to approach things differently each time.  Sometimes we try our existing models, other times we do research and formulate new models.

What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your job?

The problems we work on are both the most challenging and rewarding parts of my job.  We work on highly complex problems with real life applications.  It’s really rewarding when you tackle a problem like that.   We usually brainstorm as a team to come up with new solutions and figure out which one of our solutions work best for the situation at hand.  I see my work here as a continuation of my education.

Why did you choose to work in the field of data analytics?

It’s a new and exciting field that’s growing fast.  Also, it’s a field where you get to use your analytical skills and academic knowledge.

Describe a typical day at work.

I spend a portion of my time interacting with clients, visiting them in their offices.  On a typical day spent at Invent offices; we usually have an early project meeting with the project team to report our progress and discuss the project roadmap.  Sometimes our research scientists and algorithm lead join these meetings.  I spend the rest of the day alternating between my desk and the meeting rooms.  A lot of the stuff we do here, we do them as a team.

What is you favorite off-duty activity?

I love literature and writing.

Tell us about your background.

I graduated from Istanbul Technical University with a bachelor’s degree in management engineering.  Looking back at it, it was a great fit for my job here at Invent because it is an interdisciplinary program that has elements of strategic management, statistics and information technologies and our work here is a cross between those fields. I am currently enrolled in Bogazici University for masters in industrial engineering.

Describe your work here at Invent.

I am currently overseeing two projects. My job is to develop the best solution for the client’s case together with the algorithm team and make sure that it gets implemented correctly.  It’s also my job to manage the communication between the project team and the client.

What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your job?

Our solutions are highly customized for our clients’ needs, which means you need to be very innovative as a team.  It also requires paying attention to clients’ concerns, and maintaining a healthy dialogue between the project team and the client.  This type of work is challenging but also really rewarding.  I also enjoy working as a team and it’s a great feeling when you bring a challenging problem to a solution as a team.

Why did you choose to work in the field of data analytics?

If you are an engineer who wants to develop innovative solutions to real world problems, data analytics is a highly satisfying and enjoyable career option.  That was the case for me.

Describe a typical day at work.

I usually arrive work at 9 am, have coffee and a sandwich while checking emails.  I start the day with reviewing the workload and take note if anything needs prioritizing. On most days we have a short meeting in the morning as a project team to share the updates and figure out what’s next in the project.  After the meeting, I check the KPI’s on live projects to see whether there are any outliers.  If there are outliers I spend time digging deeper to understand why they are under or over-performing and update the model if it’s necessary.  We like to go to lunch together as a company, a habit from earlier days of the company, but it’s getting more and more difficult as our group is growing really fast. I spend rest of my day analyzing data and developing models for my next task.  This is a typical day spent in the office.  I also spend a good amount of time visiting clients, meeting with their management teams, preparing and making presentations etc.

What is you favorite off-duty activity?

I like hanging out with my friends.  I also like cycling and going to the movies.

Tell us about your background.

I graduated from Bogazici University in 2011 with a degree in computer engineering.  Before coming to Invent I worked for an optimization software company and a mobile gaming start-up.  I am from Adana and I went to Adana Anatolian High School.

Describe your work here at Invent.

An important part of my job at Invent is to prepare the data, which means collecting, cleaning and sampling the clients’ data.  This is a step people tend to underestimate but it’s something you need to be meticulous about because it becomes the foundation of the project.  Once the data is ready I work with the data scientists in my team to apply regressions and classifications to make forecasts.  Another important part of my job is overseeing the reporting system to present and interpret the data in the most meaningful way.

What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your job?

What I find most rewarding about my job is being able to create actual value for companies just by making things run more efficiently.  The most challenging part of the job is constantly monitoring the systems. You have to be vigilant at all times.

Why did you choose to work in the field of data analytics?

I love learning new skills and working in data analytics provides you with tons of opportunities to expand your skill set.  When your working environment teaches you new things it doesn’t get monotonous and you feel good about yourself.   Also, big data seems to be the new frontier in my field so it’s exciting to be a part of it.

Describe a typical day at work.

I usually start my day with checking on the scheduled jobs to see if everything had run smoothly.   Then I continue my day working on developing projects and testing them.  I have couple of meetings throughout the day with project partners and clients.  We have company-wide meetings on Monday mornings and monthly happy hours every last Friday of the month to catch up on other ongoing projects and listen to presentations by co-workers or guest speakers.

I attended Bogazici University, where I majored in industrial engineering. I spent a semester of college at University of Washington in Seattle as an exchange student.  I have been swimming competitively since I was very young.   I enjoy traveling, extreme sports and outdoors.  I am a graduate of Kabatas High School.

What are the most rewarding and most challenging parts of your job?

Overall I find working at Invent a highly rewarding experience.  It’s a demanding job in the sense that aside from talent and know-how it requires a positive attitude and commitment to the task and I actually like that aspect of it.  The challenging nature of the job is what motivates me most.

Why did you choose to work in the field of data analytics?

I became interested in data analytics because of the people who work here at Invent.  After meeting the Invent team I decided I would like to work with these people and they happened to be working in data analytics, which turned out to be a great field by the way.  My instincts were not wrong.

Describe a typical day at work.

It’s going to sound vague but I liken my daily routine at work to a pendulum. It keeps swinging between those rewards and challenges we just talked about.

What is your favorite off-duty activity?

I enjoy activities that contribute to my personal development.  I am taking classes from Bogazici University’s masters program in software engineering, which means spending some of my free time studying.  I also keep training with my swimming team and compete in races.   With so much going on at work and school, I find it much more difficult to make time for paragliding, kite surfing and other outdoors sports I love.
